Modeling Authenticity in CASPAR

This presentation is connected to those by Luigi Briguglio and David Giaretta, each dedicated to different aspects concerning authenticity and how they deal with it in CASPAR.
Maria Guercio introduces this topic by highlighting its extreme significance in the preservation process and giving a general overview of the effort made and the achievements reached in this specific area of the research project.
Being aware of the dynamic profile of authenticity, the need for specific tools and methodologies to deal with it, using the OAIS reference model as a base, together with the outputs of the InterPARES project, particularly those concerning the crucial concepts of identity and integrity, the authenticity team, on the one hand, has identified a set of attributes that permit the capture of information relevant for the authenticity as it can be collected along the life cycle of the digital objects and on the other hand, has developed the required tools and procedures to manage this information. This, in turn, is generally relevant not only for authenticity reasons, but also for the accuracy of the preservation process and for disseminating and reusing the preserved materials correctly.
The following presentation given by Giovanni Michetti shows the model that has been developed and used in the concrete testbed implementation in more detail.
The general conceptual model of authenticity is explained by means of the UML notation.
This model, founded on the concept of Authenticity Protocol, a process which is designed to assess the authenticity of a resource, can be applied to specific domains and specific components, as confirmed by the other partners’ testbeds.
By showing it, Giovanni Michetti highlights the dynamic profile of authenticity and its correlation with the criteria and procedures adopted to analyse and evaluate it and provides the definitions of the fundamental concepts on which the model is based.
